AWIPS - NSF Unidata AWIPS 23.4.1-0.4 Full Beta Release

AWIPS 23.4.1-0.4 is a full beta release, with both EDEX and CAVE installation options.

This release (building upon previous versions 23.*) includes a major upgrade for the operating system, running on Rocky 8 Linux – which is a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution for EDEX and linux based CAVE.

This release is still in beta since the National Weather Service (NWS) is still working on their 23.4.1 release to operations. In the interim, we are waiting on final clearance from the NWS, before releasing a production (non-beta) version and source code. Users will have the option of installing their own EDEX, or continue to connect to Unidata's public EDEX (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu).

ℹ️ We will still have our version 20 public EDEX up and available at edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu, but the version of CAVE you are running has to match the version of EDEX it's connected to (ex. version 23.* of CAVE will not connect to version 20.* of EDEX and vice versa).

⚠️ At the end of the 2024 calendar year, our version 20 public EDEX will be decommissioned due to RedHat7/Rocky7 End of Life and you will be forced to update to version 23 to continue to access data.

AWIPS - NSF Unidata AWIPS 23.4.1-0.2 Beta CAVE Release

AWIPS 23.4.1-0.2 is a beta release of CAVE for installation on linux, mac, windows, and virtual machines (Windows and Linux). This release includes a major upgrade for the operating system, running on Rocky 8 Linux – which is a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution.

This release is a CAVE only release, where we have a public version 23.4.1 EDEX for our users to connect to using the edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu URL. The National Weather Service is still working on their 23.4.1 release to operations. In the interim, we are waiting on final clearance from the NWS before releasing a public Unidata EDEX install and source code. We understand the CentOS7/RHEL7 end of life is upon us, but this is all we are allowed to provide at this time.

AWIPS - NSF Unidata AWIPS 20.3.2-2 Software Release

We are excited to announce our release of 20.3.2-2 that incorporates many updates and fixes from the 20.3.2-1 release. This release includes installers for CAVE (CentOS7, Windows, VMware Player, and MacOS), and for EDEX (CentOS7).

EDEX Updates

Fix syntax error in pqact.conf.priority and pqact.grids
Fix regex for satellite data so we don't request duplicate data in pqact.conf.priority and pqact.goesr
Replace checkFileTime.pl with checkFileTime.sh which can run without root permissions via cron
Replace ufpy package with NSF Unidata’s python-awips package
Update awips_install.sh installer to disableexcludes from yum.conf
Update derived parameters to include GFS20 to fix Surface Precipitation
Updates to satellite menu:
- Update CPSD description file
- Add Fog derived products to GOES WCONUS menu
- Added "Rocket" to plume menu items
- Updated Meso and Full RGB menus to have all valid RGB's

AWIPS - NSF Unidata AWIPS 20.3.2-1 Production AWIPS Release

Welcome back to AWIPS Tips!

We are excited to announce our production release of AWIPS 20.3.2-1. This release includes installers for CAVE (CentOS7, Windows, VMware Player, and MacOS), and for EDEX (CentOS7).
This release uses RHEL7 (CentOS7), Java11 and Python3.

⚠️ Our main edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu EDEX is now version 20 and will not be compatible with previous versions of CAVE (ex. version 18.2.1)

ℹ️ Our version 18 EDEX will be available for a limited amount of time, so if you need to use that during your transition to version 20 please contact us at [email protected]

How to Install EDEX Instructions:

Linux

Download the latest awips_install.sh
In a terminal, go to the download directory
Make the installer an executable:
- chmod 755 awips_install.sh
Run the installer as root
- ./awips_install.sh --server
Start EDEX
- sudo edex start

ℹ️ If this is the first time installing EDEX on a server, you may need to configure a few additional settings. More detailed instructions can be found here.

How to Install CAVE 20.3.2-1

Download the latest awips_install.sh

ℹ️ This should remove previously installed versions of CAVE

In a terminal, go to the download directory
Make the installer an executable:
- chmod 755 awips_install.sh
Run the installer as root
- ./awips_install.sh --cave
Remove caveData
- rm -rf ~/caveData
Start CAVE by opening a terminal
- cave

Windows

Remove old builds of CAVE.
Download and Install: awips-cave.msi
Start CAVE by clicking on the CAVE icon on your Desktop

MacOS

Download and install CAVE: awips-cave.dmg
Start CAVE by selecting System Menu Go > Applications > CAVE

Virtual Machine

ℹ️ This can be installed on Windows or Linux and requires VMWare Workstation Player (free software)

Download the zipped file containing the virtual machine: unidata_cave.zip
Unzip the folder.
Open VMWare Player and go to Player > File... > Open and locate the folder that was created from the downloaded zipped file. Select the file called "CentOS 7 - Unidata CAVE 20.3.2-1.vmx".
Run this new VM option. If it asks if it's been moved or copied, select "I Copied It".
- There will be a user in the Linux machine named "awips" and the password is "awips"

UNIWISC Legacy Satellite products have been added

QPID SSL environment variables are set on install
LDM has been updated to version 6.14.5
Fire and Public Forecast Zones have been updated
Removed a number of unused plugins for better performance
Updated postgres logging format to use date instead of day of week
Station location/metadata will auto update based on updates from the National Database Manager

CAVE Updates

NSHARP Button has been added to the top of CAVE
NSHARP "Load" preferences has been updated to v18 functionality (loads a list of available Upper Air locations by time)
Updated Export Menu wording
Added additional hotkeys to load/save displays
Default Procedure GUI is larger and resizable
CAVE --> About Dialog now shows build date/version

Windows Specific:

CAVE will run with users that have spaces in their username

Mac Specific:

Default "Put Home Here" GUI is larger and resizable

AWIPS 20.3.2-0.3 is a beta release of CAVE. We have updates for all installation options of CAVE. The biggest improvement with this release are updated installers for both Mac and Windows -- CAVE no longer requires System or User Environment changes to run!

Not all functionality is available yet, but we wanted to get something out there for people to start playing with and testing. This release is a CAVE only release, with us at Unidata running a version 20.3.2 public EDEX (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu) that you can connect to.

ℹ️ We will still have our version 18.* public EDEX up and available for the foreseeable future, but the version of CAVE you are running has to match the version of EDEX it's connected to.

Update City Map names density and sizing to be more similar to v18

AWIPS 20.3.2-0.2 is a beta release of CAVE. Great news, we've added installers for MacOS and Windows as well as made updates to the Linux and virtual machine options.

Not all functionality is available yet, but we wanted to get something out there for people to start playing with and testing. This release is a CAVE only release, with us at Unidata running a version 20.3.2 public EDEX (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu) that you can connect to.

ℹ️ We will still have our version 18.* public EDEX up and available for the foreseeable future, but the version of CAVE you are running has to match the version of EDEX it's connected to.

As a reminder 20.3.2 is running:

Python 3.6

Updated GIS dialog so the default size fits on more screens, and it has the ability to be resized now

Download the latest awips_install-v20.sh
In a terminal, go to the download directory
Make the installer an executable:
- chmod 755 awips_install-v20.sh
Run the installer as root
- ./awips_install-v20.sh --cave
Remove caveData
- rm -rf ~/caveData
Start CAVE by opening a terminal
- cave

Windows

Remove old builds of CAVE.
Download and Install: awips-cave.msi
Add %APPDATA%\UCAR Unidata\AWIPS CAVE\Python to your Path and PYTHONHOME environment
Start CAVE by clicking on the CAVE icon on your Desktop

MacOS

Download and install Python3.6 to the default directory (/Library/Framework/...)
- Use all the default settings during installation.
- After completing the installer, you must run the Install Certificates.command, do this by double-clicking on the file in the downloaded folder.
- Finally, you need to change your environment with these latest changes, to do so, open a terminal and type source .zprofile
  - If this file does not exist, double click and run the Update Shell Profile.command in the downloaded folder.
- Now you can confirm you have the correct version of python by running which python3 and the output should be:

/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.6/python3
```
Download and install these supplemental python packages
Download and install CAVE
Start CAVE by selecting System Menu Go > Applications > CAVE

AWIPS - Unidata AWIPS 20.3.2-0.1 Beta CAVE Release

AWIPS 20.3.2-0.1 is beta release of CAVE for install for Linux and virtual machines (Windows and Linux). We are currently working on a MacOS release.

Not all functionality is available yet, but we wanted to get something out there for people to start playing with and testing. This release is a CAVE only release, with us at Unidata running a version 20.3.2 public EDEX (edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu) that you can connect to.

ℹ️ We will still have our version 18.* public EDEX up and available for the foreseeable future, but the version of CAVE you are running has to match the version of EDEX it's connected to.

Major Updates:

System upgrade to Python 3.6
JAVA upgrade to openJDK 11

Other Updates:

Additional multi-pane layouts (2, 9, and 16 panel)
Multi-color and line-style contouring (see image above)
Faster looping (up to 30 frames per second)
Ability to select from the previous 3 runs of a model
Additional radar elevation scans below 0.5 degrees

How to Install CAVE 20.3.2-0.1

Download the latest awips_install-v20.sh
In a terminal, go to the download directory
Make the installer an executable:
- chmod 755 awips_install-v20.sh
Run the installer as root
- ./awips_install-v20.sh --cave
Remove caveData
- rm -rf ~/caveData
Start CAVE by opening a terminal
- cave

This can be installed on Windows or Linux and requires VMWare Workstation Player (free software)

Download the zipped file containing the virtual machine: CentOS7-Unidata-CAVE-20.3.2-0.1
Unzip the folder.
Open VMWare Player and go to Player > File... > Open and locate the folder that was created from the downloaded zipped file. Select the file called "CentOS 7 - Unidata CAVE 20.3.2-0.1.vmx".
Run this new VM option. If it asks if it's been moved or copied, select "I Copied It".
- There will be a user in the Linux machine named "awips" and the password is "awips"

EDEX Connection

Select the server in the Connectivity Preferences dialog, or enter edex-beta.unidata.ucar.edu.

Functionality/Reporting

This is a beta release, so we are aware that not all functionality is working as expected. We ask you to please be aware of this and have similar expectations. One noteworthy deficiency we are aware of is the radar menu has not been updated yet to reflect what is in version 18. If you come across issues/bugs/missing functionality, we also encourage you to report it using this short form.

AWIPS - Unidata AWIPS 18.2.1-6 Software Release

AWIPS 18.2.1-6 is a new release to both EDEX and CAVE. More information is listed below.

EDEX Updates

Uncommented LDM pqact entries for NAM12 to get full suite of data from NOAAPort and CONDUIT

How to Install AWIPS 18.2.1-6

⚠️ If you already have EDEX installed, do NOT use yum update. Use the latest awips_install.sh and this will give you the opportunity to back-up configurations and logs before removing builds of CAVE/EDEX and installing new versions

ℹ️ If you have a machine where you are wanting both CAVE and EDEX installed, install EDEX first, then CAVE

EDEX Instructions:

Linux

Download the latest awips_install.sh
In a terminal, go to the download directory
Make the installer an executable:
- chmod 755 awips_install.sh
Run the installer as root
- ./awips_install.sh --server
Start EDEX
- sudo edex start

- Commented out quality flags for some derived products that were getting cut-off when plotting (This was from the recommendation of Lee Byerle).

EDEX Updates

Fixed an issue with EDEX ingest failing to starting up (https://github.com/Unidata/awips2/issues/412)
Updated the awips_install.sh install script
- Added checks to check for wget and rsync and install if they aren't installed (https://github.com/Unidata/awips2/issues/410)
- Updated the "backup" section - gives users the option to not backup data
- Only backs up the ldm/etc and ldm/dev directories instead of the full LDM directory (https://github.com/Unidata/awips2/issues/411)
- Added a line to clean the metadata in the awips2 repo (noticed some issues when installing a new build on
  a machine that previously had AWIPS installed pointing to the same location but had updated rpms).
- Added a change to set the LDM_PORT for server installs

CAVE Updates

No updates were made to CAVE, however on linux, the latest build version is now 18.2.1-4

EDEX Updates

Updating/consolidating Satellite menu with new GOES data
- New GOES West derived products
- New GOES Fire Mask products
- New GLM Flash Points
Updated LDM from version 6.13.11 to 6.13.16
Added functionality (and additional plugins) for EDEX to check and update the latest station information daily (for METAR, Upper Air, Radar, etc. products)
Several updates related to GLM Data:
- AWIPS GLM data distribution will soon be migrated from Texas Tech to a source from NWS. This release includes configurations for both GLM datasets.
- The menu items have been updated for the new data feed which the Unidata EDEX is ingesting and displaying.
- For EDEX's run locally, access to the Texas Tech distribution is still available through the product browser (product names end with "_TT"). We will send out another notice when Unidata is distributing the NWS GLM data via IDD.
Added support for Snow Squall Warnings (SQ.W)

Bug fixes:

Update modelsounding plugin to decode new modelsounding data
Fix units for Absolute Vorticity and Vertical Shear
Update the roles authentication to handle usernames containing a space, to reduce warnings in the logs

CAVE Updates

Several small changes to the Warngen Dialog:
- Changed the default size to accommodate smaller screens/different resolutions
- Added the ability to resize and gave priority to the action list
- Changed action list behavior (for some OS's) so that selecting an action does not reset to the beginning of the list
Changed default size of Import GIS Dialog to fit on smaller screens
Added ability to display more Watches, Warnings, and Advisories
The startup connection window now defaults the specified EDEX to Unidata's EDEX (edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu) if no default is specified in caveData (this was already included in the previous MacOS minor release)
Removed all instances of the word "bundle" for clarity and to align with our documentation

⚠️ GOES RGB composites are not supported on macOS or in Virtual Machines due to OpenGL Shading Language limitations

Release Notes:

AWIPS 18.2.1-1 is a major update to both EDEX and CAVE (on Windows, MacOS, and Centos7/RHEL7). More information is listed below.

The linux awips_install.sh script has been updated to remove old versions of CAVE and EDEX before installing new versions and backup some /awips2 configuration files.
While old versions of CAVE will connect to the new EDEX, the menus will be outdated and we strongly suggest you update CAVE.

EDEX Updates

Moved all Satellite, MRMS, and Model menus to EDEX side
- With the continuing updates to these products, this makes it easier for the menus to be updated on the EDEX side, rather than having every user update their CAVE version

AWIPS - Unidata AWIPS 18.1.1-6

Updates to Surface, NCEP/Hydro, Upper Air menus and bundles, including return of SIGMET/AIRMET menu.
Fix for the reprojection of MetarSurfaceTemp data.
Fix coloring of MetarSurfaceTemp data to avoid rendering of point data as black-on-black.
Added RTOFS to LDM/EDEX, as well as CAVE menus and data bundles.
Linux-specific fix for CAVE to allow for RPM updates.
Linux-specific EDEX dependency updates to include net-tools.
LDM updated to version 6.13.10.

AWIPS - Unidata AWIPS 18.1.1-5

AWIPS 18.1.1-5 is a major update to both CAVE and EDEX, including a security update to the latest httpd/mod_wsgi packages.

EDEX administrators should be aware that localization levels have changed, and Unidata AWIPS no longer supports REGION, DESK, or WORKSTATION levels.
EDEX administrators should be aware that USER-level localization names have been merged with the WORKSTATION name, that is, what used to be USER awips will now be USER awips@<workstation name>
It may be required that EDEX admins migrate saved USER procedures and bundles to the new naming system, which may be tedious, but is necessary for use of CAVE in a classroom and lab setting going forward. This update prevents users from overwriting each other's customizations if they happen to have the same username.

CAVE Updates

Reorganized File Menu for saving and loading bundles, procedures, and perspectives.
D2D default view switched to 5-pane with GOES E/W geostationary views, plus regional and local views.
New GOES Geostationary perspective multi-view bundles loaded from the Satellite menu.
New menu items for GOES 17 (GOES West) sectors WCONUS, WFD, WMESO-1, WMESO-2, AKREGI, HIREGI.
WWA (Watch, Warn, Advisory) plugin display updates with phensig color table and full text on sampling. These new bundles are located in the Surface menu, available for flood, wind, marine, as well as All Warnings and Convective Watches.
Fix for the Linux GFE Perspective to sync required files to run gfeConfig correctly (Yes, GFE actually runs again, good luck!)

EDEX Updates

Removal of REGION, DESK, and WORKSTATION localization level. Any configuration or setting which used the DESK or WORKSTATION levels will now use SITE instead. This makes for only 3 localization levels to manage in Unidata AWIPS from 18.1.1-5 onward: 1) BASE (default), 2) SITE (e.g. OAX), and 3) USER.
More efficient thread control for the ingestGrib JVM in /awips2/edex/etc/ingestGrib.sh rather than using definitions in /awips2/edex/conf/resources/.
Updated the /etc/init.d/edex_ldm wrapper to allow for the use of ldmadmin clean as root.
Fixed a bug with Python environments when running edex qpid as root.
Updated pqact.conf to include GOES 17 products, as well as a fix to ingest both METOP-A and B ascat files.

AWIPS - AWIPS 18.1.1-2 Updates

This is a minor release for EDEX only (no CAVE updates):

edex status will mute EDEXregistry if Data Delivery/OGC plugins are not installed.
Data Delivery/OGC plugins are not being used currently, but work is ongoing to incorporate them into EDEX (more on this in the future).
New awips2-python-scipy RPM for CentOS 7.
FNMOC grid names corrected in awips2-edex-dataplugins.
Updated awips2-ldm and awips2-edex to remove the edex setup command from post-RPM scripts, and from EDEX startup, to avoid overwriting user edits to the LDM registry.
"edex setup" will be a required command after install and before starting EDEX services.

Windows CAVE 18.1.1

- Requires Python 3.7, Jep (3.8.2), and NumPy (>1.7).
- $PYTHONHOME must be defined for full functionality using gridslice and jep.
- The MSI installer will attempt to copy the gridslice shared library to $PYTHONHOME/Dlls. If the $PYTHONHOME environmental variable is not defined, gridslice will not be installed.
- You can always rerun the installer after defining $PYTHONHOME and then check that the file gridslice.pyd is installed in $PYTHONHOME/Dlls.
- Windows CAVE will run without gridslice, but certain bundles which use derived parameters, such as isentropic analyses, will not load.

Future Development

Inclusion of new AWIPS Hazards plugins for decision assistance (new product generation tools and hydro configurations to integrate with WarnGen and the Hydro perspective).
New Space Weather Prediction Center plugins for Geomagnetic Data, Solar Imagery, Generic High Cadence Data, and Time Series displays).
Unidata now has the source code to build 64-bit Hydro Applications (these Hydroapps were supplied as 32-bit binaries in the Vlab source code repositories, which were disabled in previous Unidata AWIPS releases).
OGC and Data Delivery plugins will be made available in the 18.1.1 release as an optional add-on to a standard EDEX Data Server installation (two additional RPMs).
OHD and Hydro Applications will also be made available as optional EDEX add-ons in the awips2-edex-dat and awips2-hydroapps RPMs.
