Purpose\n\n_mescal_ is a Python package for the creation and management of life-cycle inventory databases and generation of \nsustainability metrics derived from Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), to be integrated Energy System Models (ESM) in order to \nmake energy transition pathways sustainability assessment more holistic, transparent and reproducible.\n\n_mescal_ is a specialized package of the [Brightway Software Framework](https://brightway.dev/), mainly relying on the [_bw2calc_](https://github.com/brightway-lca/brightway2-calc) \nand [_wurst_](https://github.com/polca/wurst) Python packages.\n\n_mescal_ was designed for all researchers and modellers aiming to include life-cycle assessment (LCA) in their analyses, \nwithout necessarily being LCA experts. On the other hand, _mescal_ is also designed for LCA experts who want to\nintegrate projections from ESM into their LCA studies.\n\n![workflow of the mescal methodology](docs/pics/workflow.png \"workflow\")\n\nLife-Cycle Inventory (LCI) datasets are taken from ecoinvent and possibly other sources if some of the ESM technologies \nare not covered in the ecoinvent database, e.g., [_premise_](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S136403212200226X) additional inventories. These LCI datasets are mapped \nto the ESM technologies and resources. Systematic transformations are operated on LCI datasets, including \nregionalization, databases harmonization, double-counting removal, and life-cycle impact assessment. \nLCA indicators are then ready to be integrated in the ESM.\n\n## How to use _mescal_?\n\nYou can follow this [example notebook](https://github.com/matthieu-str/mescal/blob/master/examples/tutorial.ipynb) to learn how to use _mescal_.
